Executive Summary

Blockchain Domain Name for the New Internet

Portal Network is a decentralized platform that provides blockchain protocols and projects with the BNS standard governed by smart contracts. Its standard is robust, reliable, and user-friendly. Portal Network has successfully deployed BNS-compatible systems across various blockchains, such as Wanchain Name Service (WNS), QTUM Name Service (QNS), ICON Name Service (INS), QuarkChain Name Service (QCNS), NEM Name Service (NEM-NS), TomoChain Name Service (TNS), and many more.

In addition to its BNS technology, Portal Network has developed a product suite that allows both technical and non-technical users to learn, create, deploy, and experience decentralized websites and applications. Its initial deployments for this product, which include Ethereum Improvement 1062, Ethereum Classic Improvement 1044, and a MetaMask integration, have already been proposed and adopted by a number of industry-leading projects.

Portal Network’s mission is to provide the tools necessary to empower developers and users to create new value within the blockchain ecosystem, driving widespread adoption of decentralized technology.

Motivation

Problem in Blockchain that is limiting its User Experience

Despite the promise of Web 3.0, the user experience of interfacing with this technology remains challenging, even for sophisticated technical users. Blockchain addresses and hashes are meaningless, hard to memorize and are not user-friendly. For end-user experiences, blockchain tools such as wallet addresses, IPFS hashes, and smart contracts have not been able to provide users with frictionless and simple experiences when exchanging tokens, visiting ÐWeb sites, and interacting with dApps and smart contracts.

Take crypto wallet as an example. Its public key (wallet address) and its private key (password) are a long combination of random numbers and alphabets that looks like “0xA5e1DA5eE7E…”. As a result, cryptocurrency users often are prone to make mistake when transferring these digital assets. Same goes for the decentralized storage where hashes like "QmSpuwejUGjREm..." are used to store and retrieve its relevant contents.

With BNS however, users can make use of Web 3.0 features, like sending tokens, interacting with a smart contract, hosting a website, or representing their digital identity in a human-meaningful way. Portal Network aims to drive public adoption by implementing this human-readable naming conventions for accessing decentralized services.
